Hagg.ai’s media intelligence pinpoints how and where news arises so netizens can understand the range of antisemitism and Jewish security news from around the globe.

Around the world, “antisemitic, xenophobic, and hateful messages and conspiracy theories are proliferating rapidly online,” according to the Anti-Defamation League, especially in relation to conspiracies related to coronavirus. And 63% of surveyed Jews have had personal experiences with antisemitism and hate in the United States over the past five years, according to the 2021 Survey on Jewish Americans’ Experiences with Antisemitism. Likewise, in Europe, violent online rhetoric has been coupled with antisemitic offline physical attacks in recent years, and the European Union has responded with the Council Declaration on the fight against antisemitism.

“Hagg.ai solves the Jewish Diaspora’s current challenge of relying on a mishmash of reporting and alerting methods for understanding both ongoing Jewish security news and pending crises,” says Daniel Levinson, founder of Hagg.ai. “Hagg.ai is empowering. It’s the immediately usable platform that brings together all the critical Antisemitism and Jewish security information online, anywhere and anytime.”

Computer algorithms generally select what is shown on Hagg.ai from thousands of online sources, and the algorithms determine which stories, images, and videos show, and in what order. Individual news stories are copyright their respective sources on Hagg.ai, and Hagg.ai organizes the data based on Natural Language Processing techniques. Future iterations of Hagg.ai will introduce non-English-language source data translated and organized into English. Levinson has been working in the OSINT, artificial intelligence, and media intelligence world for over 20 years, primarily in Asia, where he has founded, built, and sold multiple data intelligence companies that supplied critical business and risk intelligence to government, corporate, and organizational clients.

From where does the name Hagg.ai originate? Haggai was one of the twelve minor prophets in the Tanakh, or Hebrew Bible, during the building of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Most importantly, he is known for two important things: he is the author of the eponymous Book of Haggai; and in 520 BCE he had his prophecy where he commanded the Jews to rebuild the Temple.

While the daily briefs on Hagg.ai are continuously free for all subscribers, the platform is funded by donations and by advertising both inside the daily email alerts and on the Hagg.ai website. Netizens can also visit Hagg.ai via social media on Twitter at https://twitter.com/hagg_ai or LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/haggai/

Hong Kong, China, March 27, 2021 /Xinwengao.com/ - According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), using a mask with multiple layers will help keep respiratory droplets from getting inside or outside of the mask. One company has come out with a 4-ply mask that will provide the highest level of protection from the virus so people don’t have to try to double or triple up on masks. The SureSafe-4 is currently available from CurexLab Inc., one of the largest personal protection equipment (PPE) providers in the world.

“When Americans turned to double masking in order to protect themselves against the virus, we designed our SureSafe-4 mask,” explains Shan S. Haider, chief executive officer at CurexLab Inc. “It provides solid protection by X2 filter, which is comfortable to wear, easy to breathe, and affordable to use.”

The SureSafe-4 mask available at CurexLab is made in Turkey and meets the CDC guidelines for disposable masks and the manufacturer is registered with the FDA. It’s a disposable mask that has been scientifically developed in the lab to provide protection against air droplets, bacteria, and virus. The new disposable mask offers two melt-blown filters and is comfortable, breathable, and affordable.

The CDC further advises that wearing a mask is a critical step to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. They recommend that the mask fit snugly on the face, so that there are no open edges around the sides of the mask. Those who have problems with masks fitting properly may want to add a mask fitter or brace to help it be more snug. The mask should be worn around the nose, mouth, and chin. They report that disposable masks are not designed to fit tightly and that wearing more than one will not improve the fit.

“We are happy to be able to offer people this 4-ply mask, which will help keep them safer when it comes to virus exposure,” added Haider. “It’s easier to put on and use, and people find it more comfortable than trying to layer up multiple masks.”

CurexLab Inc., pioneers in clinical diagnostic kits, offers a range of COVID-19 PPE supplies and lab supplies at affordable costs. Its product line includes antibody rapid testing kits, RNA COVID-19 extraction kits, inferred thermometers, ventilators, face shields, hand sanitizer, nitrile gloves, KN95 masks, three and four-ply masks, isolation and surgical gowns, and coveralls.
Ponddy officially launches the first At-home Online HSK test center in the US along with its new AI-powered smart learning solutions for Chinese Language learners.

San Jose, United States, February 10, 2021 /Xinwengao.com/ - Ponddy® Education Inc., an industry leader in AI smart language learning, has recently announced its official partnership with “CTI”, Chinese Testing International Co., Ltd. – the global HSK language examination provider – to launch the hsk.ponddy.com. Ponddy® HSK is the first online HSK test center in the U.S.A. that offers at-home online testing services for HSK, HSKK, YCT, and BCT official Chinese language tests. Students may prepare for the tests with Ponddy® courses, which are designed by an expert-teaching team and are fully accredited by ACS Western Association of Schools and Colleges of the United States. With the addition to the testing service, Ponddy now offers complete Chinese learning solutions that include intelligent platforms, customized resources, tailored curricula, on-line tutors, and at-home online testing services.

HSK test results are required by universities in China as proof of language proficiency for enrollment and scholarship applications. In the US, many States accept the result as the basis for awarding the Seal of Biliteracy. Although HSK has had its internet-based test option, takers still need to go to an offline test center to complete the test online. The newly launched Ponddy® HSK at-home test edition enables risk-free test-taking from the threat of Covid-19 pandemic: test-takers in the US can complete the exam safely from the comfort of their homes.

“We are excited to partner with CTI. This is a recognition of Ponddy’s global influence as the industry leader in online Chinese language education, and a significant milestone of our mission to promote the understanding of the Chinese language as a global competitive strength for eager learners. Ponddy® is proud to offer personalized AI smart language education to learners around the world,” said Ponddy’s CEO, Franz Chen.

Besides online testing, learners can also explore options and resources for the HSK test preparation on hsk.ponddy.com. The company’s new [HSK online courses] are designed with both Adult and Student versions to suit different learning patterns for test takers of various ages and schedules. The live 1-on-1 online course allows students to engage with certified native-speaking teachers. The online nature of the classes provides students with maximum location flexibility for optimized classroom interaction and learning efficiency. With Ponddy’s smart learning platforms, learners can get personalized exercises that help them study efficiently for the test. Learners can also discuss and share experience and test prep tips with each other in the “Learn Chinese and Pass HSK” group.

About Ponddy®

Powered by innovative AKLS® AI technology, Ponddy’s smart learning solutions include intelligent platforms, customized resources, tailored curricula, on-line tutors, and at-home online testing services.
#1 risk for 2021: 46*—Biden’s election heralds era in which half of America’s voters view every new president as illegitimate.

New York, USA, January 12, 2021 /Xinwengao.com/ - As we begin 2021, the United States is the most powerful, politically divided, and economically unequal of the world’s industrial democracies. China is America’s strongest competitor, a state capitalist, authoritarian, and techno-surveillance state that is increasingly mistrusted by most G20 countries. Germany and Japan are much more stable, but the most powerful leaders both nations have had in decades are out (former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo) or on their way out (German Chancellor Angela Merkel). Russia is in decline and blames the US and the West for its woes.

Even as the world grapples with its worst crisis since World War II, some risks are more potent, deadly, and likely to change the course of world politics. These are Eurasia Group’s Top Risks for 2021, the firm’s annual prediction of the ten greatest threats to the trajectories of nations, global politics, industries and institutions. Unveiled each January, Top Risks helps investors, companies and the public anticipate and respond to opportunities wherever they invest or do business. The report is co-written by Eurasia Group President Ian Bremmer and Chairman Cliff Kupchan.

The #1 risk for 2021 is “46*”—the opening of an era in which the occupant of the White House is viewed as illegitimate by roughly half the country. Donald Trump’s refusal to accept the outcome of an election that he declares was stolen is unique in American history, underscoring how divided America has become—and will remain.

“A superpower torn down the middle cannot return to business as usual,” write Bremmer and Kupchan. “And when the world’s most powerful country is so divided, everybody has a problem. The geopolitical recession—and our G-Zero world—will deepen as a result.”

Bremmer and Kupchan go on to argue that the strength of Trump’s base and political divisions in the US will force allies to consider the possibility that any commitments made by the incoming Biden administration could be overturned in four years with the election of another “America First” president.

Other Top Risks in the report include the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, climate change, the US-China conflict, data and cybersecurity, and distinct threats facing Turkey, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. The report also includes several “red herrings”—issues that, despite media attention, are unlikely to pose significant threats or drive instability in the coming year.

Top Risks has an impressive track record for being both early and accurate in its predictions. Eurasia Group’s 2020 Top Risks report, for example, correctly predicted a contested US election as its #1 risk.

Bremmer and Kupchan will host an on-the-record press conference call today, 4 January, at 10:30 a.m. EST/15:30 GMT to discuss the risks and take questions. To participate, please register here.

Below is a summary of all ten Top Risks for 2021. Please click here for the full report.

TOP RISKS 2021

When the world’s most powerful country is as divided as the United States is now, the G-Zero geopolitical recession is sure to deepen. The world needs the leadership and cooperation that an engaged and well-functioning superpower can help provide, because, just as the healthcare response to the coronavirus pandemic defined 2020, the economic response to its lasting damage will define 2021.

#1 – 46*

Following a 2016 Trump victory that many Democrats believe Russia helped him win, Biden’s term opens the era of the asterisk presidency, a time when every Oval Office occupant is seen as illegitimate by roughly half the country—and the lawmakers that election skeptics send to Congress. Most of the risk here is domestic, but the consequences of extreme polarization for democratic legitimacy extend well beyond US borders. Apart from a shared desire to contain China, Republicans and Democrats will disagree sharply—with each other and among themselves—over the objectives of US foreign policy. In addition, the size of Trump’s base, and the broadening of that base to include more minority voters, leaves allies and potential partners wondering whether the next “America First” president and foreign policy are just four years away.

#2 – Long Covid

In 2021, the lingering symptoms of Covid-19 will threaten not just lives but political stability and the global economy. Countries around the world will struggle to meet ambitious vaccination timelines, and the pandemic will leave a legacy of high debt, displaced workers, and lost trust. The distribution of vaccines will divide haves from have nots, both within and among nations, stoking anti-incumbent anger and public unrest in many countries. Some emerging markets will experience a debt crunch this year. With inflation and borrowing costs rising, they’ll have far less room than the US and Europe to cushion Covid’s economic blow.

#3 – Climate: net zero meets G-Zero

Climate policy will move from playground of global cooperation to arena of global competition. Across a range of clean technologies, China’s longstanding industrial policy approach will now face a much more aggressive climate push from Washington. Some parts of the clean energy supply chain will face bifurcation pressures like those seen in 5G. The push for net-zero emissions targets will create enormous opportunities for private capital, especially the growing pool of environmental, social, and governance dollars and euros, but winners and losers will be determined as often by political factors as by market forces.

#4 – US-China tensions broaden

A shared desire in Washington and Beijing for stability in US-China relations will briefly ease headline tensions, but intensifying vaccine diplomacy and climate and tech competition will combine with longstanding frictions in other areas to further complicate their rivalry. Disagreements over trade, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the South China Sea will carry over into 2021. Collectively, these points of dispute will boost the risk of miscalculation and escalation toward crisis.

#5 – Global data reckoning

A slowdown or halt to the free flow of sensitive data across borders will raise costs for companies and disrupt popular apps and internet business models. This risk begins with the US and China, but it doesn’t end there. Even as the data-driven 5G and AI revolutions gain steam, other governments concerned about who is accessing their citizens’ data—and how—will erode the foundation of the open global internet. Business models for AI and other innovative tech sectors will suffer. App bans and other issues will hamper global cooperation on public health and climate challenges.

#6 – Cyber tipping point

There is no single factor that raises the risk of a major disaster in cyberspace in 2021. The digital realm, where any computer or smartphone can become an entry point for hackers and nation states, and criminals act with relative impunity, is too unpredictable for that. Instead, a combination of low-probability but high-impact risks and inexorable technology trends will make 2021 the year that cyber conflict creates unprecedented technological and geopolitical risk in cyberspace.

#7 – (Out in the) cold Turkey

Economic setbacks in 2021 and Turkey’s poor Covid response will leave President Recep Tayyip Erdogan struggling to win back voters disillusioned with his two-decade rule. These dynamics will stoke social tensions, prompt a crackdown against the opposition, and encourage Erdogan to launch more foreign policy adventures to fuel nationalism and distract his supporters. But this year, Turkey’s president won’t have international friends to shield him from the consequences.

#8 – Middle East – low oil takes a toll

Energy-producing countries in the Middle East and North Africa faced a collapse in global energy demand in 2020 that left governments from Algeria to Iran with less cash flowing into their coffers—even as the pandemic sickened citizens and weakened economies. 2021 will be worse, because energy prices will remain low. Many of these governments will cut spending, damaging vulnerable private sectors and fueling unemployment. Reforms will slow, and protests will grow.

#9 – Europe after Merkel

Angela Merkel’s departure later this year after 15 years as chancellor will drive the continent’s top risk in 2021. Europe faces an economic hangover from intensified lockdown restrictions in several countries, and Merkel won’t be there to encourage flexibility in the multilateral response. Without the German leader to serve as a strong and neutral negotiator, diplomatic efforts to resolve energy and territorial disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean will struggle, as will the UN process to address Cyprus issues. The EU position will become more hawkish as France pushes more member states to get tough with Turkey, raising the odds of diplomatic rupture.

#10 – Latin America disappoints

Governments in Latin America face intensified versions of the formidable political, social, and economic problems they were confronting before the pandemic. There will be no large-scale vaccinations until late in the year, and countries are poorly positioned to deal with another Covid wave before then. Political and economic pressures will intensify as Argentina and Mexico hold legislative elections in 2021, and voters in Chile, Ecuador, and Peru vote for president.

RED HERRINGS

Trump’s friends in trouble – Trump-friendly leaders such as Erdogan, Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro, the UK’s Boris Johnson, and Israel’s Binyamin Netanyahu will engage with the new US president where they can.

Techlash in US – US lawmakers won’t declare war on the tech companies helping to restore post-pandemic growth.

Iran-US confrontation – Ties between the US and Iran will be neither as productive nor destructive as many fear.

Beijing, China, December 28, 2020 /Xinwengao.com/ - On November 7th it was great to see everyone from the British expat community and friends again and for a sold-out British Ball. Guests were all welcomed to the wonderful “Rocketman” themed night with fun cocktails and draft beers, and delicious morsels made by TRB. This year’s good cause was EGRC which helps girls from rural China acquire their education with meals. In support, LehmanBrown worked closely in helping organise the event with the British Ball Organizing Committee and the British Chamber of Commerce in China, to make sure to pull off the ball.

The ball kicked off with a very good Elton John look-alike signing some of Elton’s greatest hits, making way for speeches by both Steven Lynch from the British Chamber of Commerce in China, and Her Majesty’s Ambassador Caroline Wilson CMG from the British Embassy to China. Once the formalities were over the guests dug into the exquisite four-course dinner with singing competitions, Best Dressed awards, and raffles.

Outside the ballroom, however, the drinks were pouring at the cocktail bar and the competition for the silent and high valued auction prizes was fierce. British Ball 2020 had over 100 prizes for guests to win and take home, ranging from free BMW test drives of their X5 model to a week stay at the Songtsam hotel.

Once the dinner was over the dance floor was packed with everyone eager to forget their worries and enjoy dancing to the classic Elton John hits and other incredible tracks of that era. LehmanBrown is very proud to have sponsored and supported the British Ball 2020, and it is a remarkable achievement to have gone ahead with the ball guaranteeing the support to a good cause. Rest assured LehmanBrown will sponsor next year’s British ball and help in its organising, carrying on this great British Beijing tradition.

Suzhou, China, December 18, 2020 /Xinwengao.com/ - While international travel restrictions remain in place, travelers can get a head start planning the ultimate insiders’ trip to Suzhou using personal recommendations from China-based expats. Through the Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism’s new #SecretsOfSuzhou Instagram campaign, foreigners based in China share their first-hand tips for making the most of a trip to Suzhou.

The campaign launched last month with a trip organized by Time Out Shanghai, that brought a group of 30 expats and travel enthusiasts to Suzhou where they explored historical sites like the Suzhou Museum of Inscribed Stone Tablets, took in traditional cultural performances in Suzhou’s classical gardens and on its romantic canals, experienced local life along Shantang Street, enjoyed the outdoors on a hike by Taihu Lake, and more. Several new weekend tour packages departing from Shanghai recently launched as a result of the trip which focus on Suzhou’s architecture and history.

Here are some of the recommendations from those who attended the trip and other foreigners who spend their days in the “City of Culture & Arts.”

Emily Axen, American living in Shanghai

Emily recently attended the nighttime cultural performance held in Master of the Nets Garden and reviews it as a great look into ancient life in Suzhou. She also shares, “I think going to museums with a guide is key. You get so much more information from a guide as a lot of the information is not written in English.”

Christian Wischnewski, German living in Suzhou

According to Chris, Suzhou has a great atmosphere with the perfect mix of history and modernity. He suggests getting out into Suzhou’s beautiful natural areas, including Mudu Old Town, Sanshan Island, and the water town of Tongli. As for a bite to eat? “I really like squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, with the sweet and sour sauce. It’s something really unique that I haven’t seen in more than 60 countries that I have visited until now,” he says.

Robyn Cronje, South African living in Shanghai (IG: @littlebitsofruby)

“Definitely visit the gardens and watch the Kunqu Opera. It is such a great way of storytelling that will leave you feeling like you have experienced a bit of China itself. The boat ride on the canals is also a must. It’s tranquil and really gives you the feeling that you’re in Venice!” Robyn says.

Yunus Emre, Turkish living in Shanghai

“I always enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Suzhou every time I’m there,” says Yunus. He describes the city as “culturally deep” and recommends that visitors take the time to enjoy the Suzhou’s historical side on any trip.

About Suzhou

For more than 2,500 years, Suzhou has been known as a center of arts and culture. Intellectuals, artists, and high profile public figures have long been drawn to the city’s romantic canals and stunning classical gardens, nine of which have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Performing arts including the Kunqu Opera and Pingtan storytelling originated in Suzhou, and the city is also important to the design and fashion worlds as a center for silk making and embroidery. In addition to its arts and culture, Suzhou is home to plentiful natural areas that allow for boundless outdoor activities. Visitors seeking Suzhou’s modern side will find five-star hotels, the iconic Lake Jinji, limitless shopping, and China’s largest overwater Ferris Wheel in the upscale and contemporary SIP District. Each year, millions of tourists travel to Suzhou to experience the destination’s more than 400 attractions, ranging from pagodas and temples to historical districts and world-class museums.

Suzhou is located in the center of the Yangtze River Delta, approximately 60 miles west of Shanghai. Suzhou is easily accessible via direct air service from North America and Europe to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG.) and is well connected with nearby cities including Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Nanjing by frequent high speed trains.

For more information on Suzhou, visit TravelToSuzhou.com, and follow the destination on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.

“When we created CharityInChina.org in 2005, we wanted to solve a critical problem that especially foreign-based organizations had in raising funds and gaining volunteers in China,” says Danny Levinson, founder of CharityInChina.org and a technology company executive. “We found a strong desire by both foreign companies with a good eye towards corporate social responsibility and solo expatriates within China to seek out volunteer and donor opportunities with NGOs in China, and we found a strong need by especially foreign-based organizations operating in China to find stakeholders in China to assist them in their respective missions. After 15 years, we’re proud of the connections we continue to make.”

The ways nonprofit organizations and charities are registered and certified in China is different from in the West and in other locations in Asia, and this has often caused problems for organizations from outside of China when they either desire to raise funds in China or wholeheartedly undertake critical programs. China’s Charity Law in 2016 followed by the Overseas NGO Law in 2017 affect how they organize as non-profit organizations in Mainland China, and this differs from how they organize themselves in their home countries or even in the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong. For example, for many international organizations, they must find local Chinese charities or public interest groups to act as partners instead of undertaking activities on their own.

CharityInChina.org is not a charity or NGO. To utilize CharityInChina.org’s resources, an organization registers on the website and provides information about what they do, where they do it, and what they need. The company is then matched to individuals, who tell CharityInChina.org if they wish to donate time or donate funds; in which type of organizations they would like to participate; and their geographic preferences within Greater China.

Then CharityInChina.org simply emails the individual when an appropriate matching opportunity arrives from an organization. Some active individuals are emailed once a month, while others less often — it’s all based on the match algorithm.

Nanjing, China, December 6, 2020 /Xinwengao.com/ - Organizing a marathon event in 2020 requires vigour and acute attention to detail, and the City of Nanjing did just that. Over 10,000 runners underwent a stringent health safety selection process, with many runners participating virtually.

This is the only National Marathon Championship and Olympic Marathon Qualifier in China taking place this year, with 200 elite national athletes participating, ready to fight for the opportunity to compete at the Olympics.

In order to ensure a safe and successful event, 2400 support crew, including over 200 medical personnel, 90 rescue workers, and 600 volunteers, all put in the time and effort. The organizer also set up 15 medical booths with 20 ambulances standing by.

At the end of the intense race, Peng Jiang Hua was the first man to cross the finishing line at 2:08:50; Li Dan took the winning spot as the first woman of the day with a time of 2:26:59.

Running in Nanjing, situated in the majestic Yangtze River Delta region, runners are surrounded by rich Chinese history and culture. The city served various Chinese dynasties, kingdoms, and republic governments, making Nanjing a ‘National City of Civilization’. It is also one of the top 10 cities in the ‘Global Sports Impact (GSI) Index’ announced by Sportcal. We can definitely look forward to more international events being hosted in the majestic city.

New global media company focused on the business and finance of the emerging climate economy. Collective of journalists, business executives, and climate professionals create an alternative form of business journalism for the climate age.

New York, USA, November 5, 2020 /Xinwengao.com/ - With a focus on the doers and seekers of a new climate economy, Climate & Capital Media announced its launch this week with a focus on ten young climate entrepreneurs delivering climate change solutions around the world. This opening feature highlights a new generation of ventures ranging from low-cost energy for the developing world and unconventional financing systems to artificial intelligence (AI) and kinetic-energy generation.

“A new age requires a new voice. Climate & Capital Media is all about the emerging climate economy,” said founder Peter McKillop. “By bringing together people and capital with a shared mission of solving climate change, we represent a new kind of media organization that’s dedicated to a more equitable and sustainable economy.”

As a membership service, Climate&Capital will publish content, host events, and manage a directory, all with the goal of accelerating climate action at scale. Unlike other publications, Climate&Capital focuses exclusively on the climate economy, with an independent editorial policy that emphasizes conversations and engagement among the doers, the seekers, and the market influencers of the climate economy.

“We need bold and meaningful action on climate change,” said co-founder David Garrison. “And to move people and capital center stage, we need new ideas, new models, and new kinds of connections. “Our goal is for Climate&Capital to stand at the center of the emerging climate economy — to be a trusted source as we lead the transformations we all want to see.”

In addition to the Ten to Watch feature, recent stories published on Climate&Capital include a leadership discussion with Matthew Weatherley-White, a look at New Zealand’s ground-breaking adoption of the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) guidelines, a quick take on how luxury fashion is embracing climate finance, and a podcast interview of journalist-author Jonathan Alter about what Joe Biden should learn from Jimmy Carter in pushing his climate agenda.

McKillop was formerly a Managing Director at BlackRock, where he was responsible for leading the firm’s strategic communications and messaging for its iShares ETF and Indexing business. He has also held senior communication leadership positions at J.P. Morgan, KKR, UBS, and Bank of America. Before entering the financial communications field, Peter was a senior correspondent and bureau chief for Newsweek in New York, Tokyo, and Hong Kong.

Garrison has advised leaders on the most difficult challenges of building meaningful brands. He previously founded the Brytemoore Group, a brand consulting firm focused on bold transformations and was a founding principal of Edelman Consulting, the former management strategy consulting arm of global communications firm Edelman. David previously held senior marketing and strategy roles in music, healthcare, and agencies.

Editors include:

Blair Palese (Global Climate Editor) — co-founder and former CEO of 350.org Australia, and previously communications director for Greenpeace International, Greenpeace USA and The Body Shop.

Howard Manly (Climate Justice Editor) — a veteran journalist who has spent most of his award-winning print and television career focused on the intersection of race, politics, and society, including as a writer for Newsweek, the Boston Globe, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Bay State Banner, one of the leading black newspapers in America. Manly is a senior fellow at the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School.

John Howell (Climate Finance Weekly Editor) — co-founder, editorial director, and chief of thought leadership for 3BL Media, for which he managed all original editorial content, wrote, and edited newsletters, and created the Brands Taking Stands initiative.

Frank Gibney Jr. (Editorial Director) — a senior journalist, writer, and editor who worked for decades as a correspondent, bureau chief, and editor for Newsweek and TIME around the U.S. and East Asia, writing extensively about Japan, China, and Vietnam, and always business.

Jyotika Bindra (South Asia Editor) — a writer based in New Delhi who was previously a fashion manager with responsibility for conducting sustainability workshops with employees regarding the eco-friendly disposal of fashion materials.

Tom Fortier (Director of Operations) — a long-time client service and product management leader, having spent 20 years in the financial technology industry, including years with Thomson Reuters and Nasdaq.

Climate&Capital is also supported by a group of advisors from across the worlds of business, finance, and media including:

Kofi Appenteng — President of the Africa-American Institute (AAI)

Ashley Allen Jones — Founder of i2 Capital

Elan J Blutinger — Managing Director of Alpine Consolidated

Adi Ignatius — Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Business Review (HBR)

In Michael Iannini’s new bestselling book “Hidden In Plain Sight: Realizing The Full Potential Of Middle Leaders”, he breaks open the doors for middle leaders to succeed by achieving a shared purpose that will improve student learning by raising the standard of teaching across the school.

“Working interdependently doesn’t happen because we label a team a learning community or administratively mandate professional learning with fixed schedules and objectives,” says Michael. “Getting teams to work interdependently requires empowered middle leaders. This book will help senior leaders empower middle leaders to take ownership of school change initiatives, by: understanding how to select middle leaders, differentiating expectations for middle leaders, and identifying the skills and knowledge middle leaders need to lead change. Middle leaders will learn how to advocate for themselves and their team, by understanding how their role changes as the team develops, establishing a clear purpose and goals, and harnessing conflict to innovate.”

“Hidden In Plain Sight” is a valuable learning tool for every educator. With a foreword written by ACAMIS’s Executive Director Tom Ulmet, this is a book that can improve middle leadership in any school.
The report released by China Money Network offers a practical review of the Chinese restructuring market and the opportunities it offers to foreign investors.

“We were delighted to speak to PwC in order to build awareness and better understand the importance of this thriving market in China, where RMB1.71 trillion (US$270 bn) of non-performing loans and RMB3.5 trillion (US$552 bn) of special mention loans offer great potential investment opportunities to offshore investors,” said Naveet McMahon, co-founder and managing partner, China Money Network.

The effort to deleverage China Inc. is underway, and overdue, as China’s credit-to-GDP ratio is clearly unsustainable. This means there are a wider array of opportunities available for foreign investors, who are viewing the Chinese debt restructuring market with increasing optimism. Buying portfolios of nonperforming-loans (NPLs) is still the preferred access point to China debt for most foreign investors. However, alternative strategies including investing in single asset situations and restructuring offshore debt of Chinese companies are also on the rise, the report uncovers.

China Money Network sat down with Victor Jong, a Shanghai-based PwC Partner focusing on debt restructurings and NPLs to discuss the changes in the Chinese restructuring landscape in the past few years, what key investment opportunities there are for investors, and how to navigate potential risks during the investment process.

China is entering into an extended credit cycle where there will be increasing levels of bad loans, bond defaults, bankruptcies and restructurings over the next few years. Compared to the last cycle, the Chinese distressed debt market offers a more mature and friendly environment for foreign investors. Investors getting into this market early will enjoy first-mover advantages in their preparedness and execution expertise in the most promising restructuring market in Asia, the report concludes.

The report will be released on May 23rd 2018, and will be available for download on https://www.chinamoneynetwork.com/2018-china-restructuring-report

Building on the success of Diversity List 2016 (5 out of 16 candidates has been appointed to government advisory committees), Diversity List 2017 profiles 22 individuals across various professions who have been through a screening process with Spencer Stuart, a leading recruitment firm and partner on the project.

“Since 21 March 2016, 5 new appointments have been given to the 16 candidates. I applaud the HKSAR government – this is a tremendous milestone for ethnic minorities. The population of ethnic minorities is young in age and is an important talent pool at a time when Hong Kong has a rapidly ageing population. This population brings local knowledge, self-defines with a Hong Kong identity and is committed to staying in Hong Kong. This population should be included in advisory committees of our government – but also on NGO boards of those organisations that address ethnic minority issues.”, said Shalini Mahtani, Founder of The Zubin Foundation.

The 22 individuals named today as part of Diversity List 2017 and the 5 Community Connectors come from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds. Alice Au, Board Director of Spencer Stuart, partner on this project said, “Along with the base criteria we also evaluated the candidates based on attributes we use for board candidates. This is a group of hardworking, talented, dedicated and passionate people many of whom have endured adversity as minorities but persevered, who have gone on to make significant contributions to their professions and communities. This is a group of people who are role models, not only for ethnic minorities groups but also for the general population in Hong Kong.”

Mr. Matthew Cheung, Chief Secretary of Administration of the Hong Kong SAR Government was the official guest to commemorate the Launch of the Diversity List & Community Connectors 2017 and deliver the opening remarks. “Hong Kong is home to a diverse and multi-racial community with more than 200 000 ethnic minority people choosing to settle here. I truly appreciate that many ethnic minorities, having been here for generations, play important roles in shaping the city’s history. And many indeed contribute to making our home a better place to live in. We embrace the value of racial equality that makes us an inclusive and strong society. We appreciate the good work of think tanks like The Zubin Foundation, which have conducted numerous research studies on ethnic minorities in Hong Kong and put forward constructive recommendations for policy makers and private organisations alike. The Government will continue to develop Hong Kong into a socially inclusive society.” said Mr. Matthew Cheung.

The Zubin Foundation started the initiative in 2016 based on the finding of our research ‘The Status of Ethnic Minorities in Hong Kong, 1997 to 2014’ authored by Puja Kapai at The University of Hong Kong Centre for Comparative and Public Law. The findings showed ethnic minorities suffering particularly in education and employment. “It got me to thinking, are ethnic minorities included in government decision making?” said Mahtani. The Zubin Foundation then conducted research to analyse the composition of HKSAR Government advisory bodies. They found that in 100 publically available advisory bodies, with 1,454 members, only 1.9% of advisory body positions were held by ethnic minorities and 79% of the ethnic minorities serving on Government advisory bodies were “White”. “Clearly there is work to be done,” adds Mahtani.

Diversity List & Community Connectors 2017 was launched on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination with over 150 attendees from the Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Thai, Nepalese, Bangladeshi communities, etc.

The projects were selected out of over 350 submissions from 14 different countries and regions, including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan.

This year’s selections include projects by young directors developing their first feature films, with an unprecedented increase in the number of women filmmakers. Most of the films are family-driven projects that touch on contemporary social issues, while others explore topics such as non-traditional families, marriages in upheaval, and the complexities of parent-child relationships. Shortlisted projects this year also include two genres not usually seen at HAF: science fiction and gothic thriller.

As one of the most recognized film-financing platforms in Asia, HAF continues its role in connecting filmmakers and their upcoming film projects with internationally prominent film financiers, producers, bankers, distributors, buyers, and funders for potential co-production ventures.

Five Hong Kong Projects to Be Presented

This year, the shortlisted projects include five from Hong Kong: veteran filmmaker Derek CHIU Sung-kee’s No.1 Chung Ying Street, a drama that examines the 1967 riots in Hong Kong; Sunny CHAN’s Man on the Dragon, a comedy-drama about five middle-age men who compete in a dragon boat championship to regain the braveness and passion of lives; Impossible Split, from TOM Chung-sing, which tells the inspiring story of bowling athlete WU Siu-hong, who achieved world championship status despite being haunted by a fatal disease. The film is produced by award-winning director Adam WONG, whose films The Way We Dance and She Remembers, He Forgets both received critical acclaim, and whose project Trains in the Night was presented at last year’s HAF.

The Goddess, from Sobel CHAN Ka-lok, pays homage to classic 1930s Chinese films and focuses on the issues of Hong Kong’s public-education system, the lives of Mainland immigrants and conflicts between mother and daughter. CHAN’s League of HK Movie Heroes was selected as one of the five finalists of the HAF/FOX Chinese Film Development Award at the 11th HAF in 2013. Completing the lineup of Hong Kong projects is Forget You, Still Love You?, about a couple whose troubled marriage finds focus again after a husband is diagnosed with a devastating illness, from co-directors Kenneth LAI Siu-Kwan and Paul SZE Pak-Lam, both of whom participated in last year’s HAF with the thriller Hypnotize the Jury.

Speaking on behalf of HAF, Mr. Jacob WONG, Curator of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society and Director of the HAF commented, “We are thrilled to receive HAF submissions worldwide with extremely high quality, offering distinct perspectives on a diversity of vibrant topics. The review process is, as expected, arduous yet exhilirating, and we are very proud of the dedication and persistence of our creative film talents.”

Women Directors Shining at the 15th HAF

Nearly half of the 25 selections consist of projects from female directors, including Femme Fatale, a dark comedy about two women whose parallel lives touch and collide, the first feature from Japanese documentary filmmaker MIYAKE Kyoko; and Made in Bangladesh, the first-ever HAF project from Bangladesh, about garment workers’ rights, from Rubaiyat HOSSAIN.

Other projects include Pawns With No Return, a touching story about fate bringing together an old man and a young boy, from CHEN Yi-Jung of Taiwan; I AM A BANANA!, an East-meets-West cross-cultural romantic comedy, from Honey B SINGH; and Rainbow Mountain, the second feature from Degena Yun of China, a drama about two Mongolian women from different generations whose lives cross paths throughout time and history. Degena’s critically acclaimed first feature, A Simple Goodbye, was presented at the 13th HAF and awarded The Spirit of Asia Award in Tokyo International Film Festival 2015.

Two more documentaries from women directors include The Grassland of Narangerel, which examines environmental challenges in Inner Mongolia, from YING Weiwei of China; and the Israeli-German co-production Leftover Women, from co-directors Shosh SHLAM and Hilla MEDALIA.

Exploring Family Dynamics and Science Fiction Genres

Family dynamics come into focus for several projects this year, including Ten Thousand Happiness from Chinese director Johnny MA, in which the sudden divorce of grandfather from an elite family in China sets off a chain of reaction, forcing each member to evaluate their own relationships with love and happiness; Indian filmmaker Shashwati TALUKDAR’s The New Wife, a Himalayan gothic thriller tale about a young bride’s discovery of the secrets harboured by her respectable new family.

The Asadas, the third feature from NAKANO Ryota of Japan, a drama with humor based on an original story inspired by the photographer Masashi Asada; and Chantou, Australian director Grant SCICLUNA’s gay-family drama about a couple who discover that their adopted Cambodian daughter is a victim of human trafficking.

Other projects include Restore Point from Robert HLOZ, a science-fiction murder mystery set in the future. It is the first sole Czech-Republic project feature to be presented at HAF. Also, an as-yet-untitled project commissioned by the Nara International Film Festival in Japan from director Ida PANAHANDEH and Japanese producer KAWASE Naomi, will be a free modern adaptation of a work by Shakespeare.

1st China LGBT Advertising Showcase, Annual Community Report Released

Shanghai, China, November 18, 2016 /Xinwengao.com/ - WorkForLGBT, leading a coalition including YouGov, Dan Lan / Blued, Rela, and Weber Shandwick, and supported by more than 20 LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) cooperative partners across China, held the 3rd Annual China Pink Market Conference on Monday, November 14th at the Langham Xintiandi Hotel Shanghai.

This was both an LGBT community as well as consumer behavior survey to better understand LGBT people in China today and better serve the future development of this community. The survey was completed in September and released as the 2016 China LGBT Community Report at the 3rd Annual China Pink Market Conference November 14th; providing an authoritative guide for companies wishing to explore the LGBT Pink Market in China.

WorkForLGBT (www.workforlgbt.org) founder Steven Paul Bielinski, lead organizer of the conference, report, and advertising showcase said, “a record number of LGBT people in China are planning to share their identity with more family, friends and co-workers in the coming years, see same-sex marriage as their ideal relationship status, and are looking for companies to voice support for LGBT friendly programs and policies.

More and more companies are realizing the importance of LGBT people as both employees and customers. Earlier this year, WorkForLGBT organized the 2nd China LGBT Talent Job Fair, with 34 Fortune 500 companies (double the number from last year) including Didi Chuxing, BlueFocus, Starbucks, BP, Citigroup, PwC and L’Oreal taking part, showcasing their support for inclusion in the recruiting and retention of talent. This year our 1st Annual China LGBT Advertising Showcase, part of the Pink Market Conference, also released seven original LGBT focused advertisements, including from leading PR agencies, advertising firms, and brands including Edelman, Burson-Marsteller, Golin Magic, and AB InBev. By sharing real world images and showcasing the stories of LGBT people, brands can truly show their support.”

Geng Le, Founder and CEO of Dan Lan, said “for three consecutive years we’ve conducted the China LGBT Community Survey. We’re looking forward to using real world data to help companies, the media, and the public realize the diversity in society and the needs of this community. By putting to use the forces of business we advance both social progress and development.

Sammy Wu, Co-Founder of Re La, shared that “in the 3rd edition of our annual report we’re pleased to see the rates of openness among LGBT people, as well as the market need for same-sex marriage continuing to rise. The LGBT community’s expectations towards businesses has also risen as they look towards companies to support LGBT friendly workplace policies as the number one factor in their purchasing decisions. This is truly the start of a new phase for China’s Pink Market.

Report Highlights

– Making up an estimated 5-10% of any population, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) China has between 70 million and 140 million citizens, with the “Pink Market” here estimated to be worth more than 2 trillion RMB.

– LGBT people are planning to be more out and open. Only 22% of gay and bisexual men and 12% of lesbian and bisexual women plan to tell no one about their identity in the next five years, versus 30% of men and 16% of women last year.

– More (now a majority of) LGBT people see same-sex marriage as their ideal relationship, 54% of men and 65% of women versus just 40% of men and 44% of women a year ago.

– LGBT people expect more from business. More than last year (47% men, 55% women), the most important factor influencing LGBT people’s purchasing decisions again is company support for LGBT friendly policies and regulations (now 56% of men and 62% of women).

– Compared to last year more LGBT people are considering overseas surrogacy and marriage. While surrogacy is expensive for most, marriage ceremonies are not, with 58% of men and 75% of women willing to pay 40,000 to 60,00 RMB to wed abroad.

– Following 2015’s results, pressure from family remains the biggest concern (70%) for those who are part of the LGBT community. This suggests that there is still more to be done to promote understanding and acceptance especially among family members.

– The general tendency for the LGBT community to travel within China (78%) is a lot higher than outside of China (28%). Like last year, the top three countries or regions that are visited outside of China are Hong Kong, Thailand and Macao.

The Park Lane Hong Kong, A Pullman Hotel is inaugurating the new brand’s signature global art initiative with an exciting display of images from Hong Kong-based US photographer Michael Kistler’s Urban Nightscapes series, ‘Melt with you’.

Pullman hotels are recognised for their vibrant urban locations. The brand embraces design, art, photography and local culture. In the new Artist Playground concept, the hotels worked with various renowned global artists and designers to breathe life into this vision to make art more dynamic and meaningful. The Pullman Artist Playground forms part of the gallery and studio concept which creates new and timeless experiences for guests through a blend of elements in local interest, unique culture and visual ingenuity.

“It is great to see the exciting display of Michael Kistler’s latest collection of Ubarn Nightscapes to inaugurate the launch of the Pullman Artist Playground here at The Park Lane Hong Kong, A Pullman Hotel,” said Michel Molliet, Chief Operating Officer of AccorHotels Greater China. “The exhibition gives guests of The Park Lane Hong Kong, A Pullman Hotel an opportunity to experience the unique elements of the brand signature through art, design and local culture in what is arguably the world’s most dynamic city.”

The exhibition will run from now until mid-February 2017 at the Ebb & Flow lobby lounge, a contemporary buzzing hotspot in the heart of Causeway Bay. Featuring a modern design, cutting edge tech elements and delectable food options, Ebb & Flow ensures a trendy vibe in line with the modern era of experiential lifestyle. More than just a hotel lounge, the forward-thinking concept of Ebb & Flow brings a seamless blend of innovation, comfort, discovery and epicurean fare, the venue of choice for the young millennial and global nomads in today’s hyper-connected world.

Curated by the internationally acclaimed Galerie Junger, Kistler’s eight thought-provoking artworks can be viewed on many levels where he uses unconventional perspectives and focuses on one-of-a-kind moments of collision, co-existence and merging of cityscape and urbanites. These pictures successfully capture the distinctive characteristics of Hong Kong’s permanent cityscape and the impermanence of its inhabitants.

About Michael Kistler
Born in Minneapolis, USA, Michael Kistler has spent 15 years in Asia, including a decade in Tokyo where he developed his characteristic photographic style, using his lenses to experiment with blur, movement and other abstract elements. Currently based in Hong Kong, he is fascinated by what is often the abstract human element and its connection to the concrete city. For him the urban landscape provides permanence while people come and go, creating a dynamic environment of fleeting moments. Michael Kistler’s work has been widely exhibited and published.
