Rutronik Announces Availability of 500VDC SMD Fuse Optimized for Electric-Vehicle Applications

Hong Kong, China, July 31, 2018 /Xinwengao.com/ - Compact, automotive-qualified fuse series offers short-circuit protection up to 1500A, saves space on crowded boards

Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente (Rutronik), a leading global distributor, recently hosted a series of BMS (Battery Management System) workshops and seminars covering all aspects of the BMS engineering design process. Littelfuse, Inc., a participant in these workshops and seminars, has now introduced the NANO2#174; 885 Series of surface-mount fuses with interrupting current ratings up to 1500A. These 885 Series fuses are optimized for use in high-voltage automotive applications up to 350VAC or 450/500VDC.

The NANO2#174; 885 Series Fuse is designed to protect electric vehicles against severe fault and short-circuit currents, ensuring reliability in harsh environments. With a low profile and a footprint of just 10.86mm x 4.78mm, the 885 Series Fuse is the smallest surface-mount fuse on the market for 450/500VDC automotive applications, making it ideal for applications where circuit-board space is limited and legacy through-hole fuses are unsuitable. The 885 Series Fuse is available in current ratings from 1A to 5A.

Typical automotive applications for the 885 Series Fuse include:

#8226; Li-ion battery packs used in electric vehicles
#8226; Battery Management Systems (BMS)
#8226; Sense lines
#8226; On-board chargers
#8226; High-voltage DC/DC converters

“Safety is an absolutely critical factor in the design of electric vehicles,” said Uwe Rahn, Rutronik Director Automotive Business Unit. “Fuses for EV applications must be designed for high voltages and currents, and for high reliability. They need to be compact, for space-constrained vehicle environments, very rugged, to withstand vibration and aggressive chemicals, and standards-compliant. The 885 Series from Littelfuse meets all of these requirements, and we are pleased to add this part to the Rutronik portfolio.”

Littelfuse 885 Series key benefits
The 885 Series Fuse offers the following key benefits:

#8226; High DC voltage ratings up to 500VDC and interrupting current ratings up to 1500A provide reliable protection against severe fault and short-circuit currents for electric vehicles.
#8226; The solderless platform used in the 885 Series Fuse’s robust design minimizes the risk of nuisance openings due to mechanical bonding failure and provides better performance for consistent functionality.
#8226; Compliance with the automotive qualifications developed by Littelfuse, based on the AEC-Q200 test plan, ensures reliability in harsh automotive environments.

“The 885 Series Fuse addresses the space limitations common in automotive applications,” said Daniel Wang, Director, Global Product Management, Electronics Business Unit at Littelfuse. “Its solderless platform minimizes the risk of nuisance openings due to the mechanical bonding failures typically associated with traditional fuse soldering, ensuring consistent overload performance.”

Availability
NANO2#174; 885 Series Fuses are available in quantities of 1,500 in tape-and-reel format. Sample requests may be placed through Rutronik, an authorized Littelfuse distributor.

Rutronik BMS workshops and seminars
Rutronik offers BMS solutions within its RUTRONIK POWER product range, and Littelfuse was one of the participants in a series of one-day workshops and seminars on battery-management systems (BMS), hosted by Rutronik in Greater China and Thailand, from July 30 to August 6. Two workshops were held in mainland China, in Shenzhen and Shanghai, while three seminars, led by specified customers, known as “Rutronik TechDays”, followed in Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Thailand.

Each of the one-day workshop/TechDay events comprised 6 sessions, covering topics that included:

#8226; Battery management systems
#8226; Battery Cell Technology
#8226; Thermal management
#8226; Functional safety with batteries
#8226; Current distribution
#8226; Analysis during loading and unloading
#8226; Hybrid Energy Storage Systems – comprising batteries plus supercaps
#8226; Digital Power
#8226; Advanced battery diagnosis

“A BMS is an absolute ‘must’ for ensuring the safe operation of today’s Li-ion batteries,” said Andreas Mangler, Strategy Marketing Director at Rutronik. “This workshop and seminar series was designed to explain the issues, the engineering options and the state-of-the-art in battery management.”
